Anden....es

Writer: Rachel AllyseRachel Allyse

This portion of the trip includes a secluded private cabin that is on the top of my list to revisit if I ever return to the Lofoten Islands in the summer. For those curious, it is called Ørreten or "Trout" on Airbnb. Since it was the winter, we got it for about $90/night, which is about half of what it is in the warmer months.

The cabin itself was once a cafe in the '60s, jukebox and all, which you would definitely understand if you saw the setup. Since the location is in a less-populated area, the cafe eventually closed. That's when the host, Viggo, stepped in and transformed it into the perfect, secluded getaway. Viggo was very personable and gave us the full tour. My favorite part was the hand-knitted wool socks that they suggested we use if it got a little cold for us. Spoiler alert, it did for me and the socks were like magic.

One of the highlights of the tour was a taxidermied fox we dubbed Jamie (i.e. The Last Five Years).

The cabin had a full kitchen, which was awesome for us as we were still cooking most of our meals. The best part of the kitchen was a large cabinet full of miscellaneous cups and mugs from the original cafe plus some that got added to the collection along the way. I also fell in love with their bookshelf packed with comic books and their guestbook that included notes and doodles from past visitors.

Outside, they have a large sauna complete with an enclosed seating area to relax in as well. The wraparound porch was unfortunately under two feet of snow but overlooks the lake for some killer views from the pictures we saw.

Our destination the next day was mainly for a whale watching tour that was unfortunately canceled due to an incoming winter storm (more on that later), so we took the opportunity to sleep in and got a bit of a later start.

Andenes is the northernmost tip of Lofoten, which felt like a great accomplishment to visit since we had previously explored Å, the southernmost point! We stopped at a little cafe close to the coastal area and got a quick breakfast and, of course, coffee. We then walked the coast, which provided some beautiful views of the sky reflecting off the water.

On our walk, we happened upon the Andenes Lighthouse which dates back to 1859. It's attached to the Andøy Museum, and you can even pay to go to the top if interested. We spent a bit of time here enjoying the view and just soaking in our last full day in Norway. The photo ops weren't too shabby either.

As the sun started to set, we made our way back to the car and took a coastal scenic route back to the cabin for the night. Since it was still rather early, we made lefse and watched a couple of movies for a cozy night in.

The morning atmosphere at the cabin was so serene and relaxing. We made coffee and got some reading time in before packing up and launching into our final few days of the trip!
